The Island and the City: The Zadar (Sub)Urban Archipelago

Isolation and remoteness are the causes of many island particularities, whether economic, demographic, ethnological, linguistic or cultural ; however, the concept of remoteness from the nearest mainland or other islands is not perceived and interpreted equally in all parts of the world. The Croatian islands belong to the category of “near islands” and, in global proportions, are indeed close to the mainland ; however, their poor traffic con¬nections and position on the geographic margins of the Croatian territory and the functional margins of socioeconomic processes have led both islanders and mainlanders to view the islands on the edge of the Croatian archipelago as remote. The Zadar islands is the common name given to the subarchipelago fac¬ing the city of Zadar on the mainland coast (see Figure 6.1). They belong to the north Dalmatian island group (Faričić 2012), and 18 are inhabited. Their position, natural resources and specific socioeconomic development have in¬fluenced how individual island settlements and their transport and functional connections have been shaped. In the past, the islands were linked with one another by boat, but in the modern age, these connections have been ne¬glected, and the islands are almost exclusively linked only with the mainland. The Croatian archipelago is widely dispersed, and the Zadar islands stand out in particular because of spatial fragmentation that hinders the synergy and complementarity of the inhabited islands. Although there are probably similar examples throughout the world, the functional and historical links and mutual influences of near islands and the neighbouring mainland have not been sufficiently covered in the available literature.
