Documenting and Conserving Traditional Technique of Metal Thread Embroidery on Man's Waistcoat from Dubrovnik Area
This paper focuses on documentation and conservation of metal thread embroidery through the study of ethnographic folk costume, intended for festive occasions from Dubrovnik region. A short sleeveless men’s vest is made of fine worsted wool couched with metallic thread, braid and ribbon, lined with plaid cotton. Study and documentation of this kind of embroidery contributes to the understanding and rediscovering of the forgotten needle technique. The conservation-restoration of metal thread embroidery couched through wool fabric and supported by paperboard, which was extremely degraded and damaged, was an interesting challenge. The project of conservation and restoration of such a complex object required close collaboration between textile and paper conservators at the Art and Restoration Department, University of Dubrovnik.
