Humour in Communication

The article is about the role and the importance of humour in everyday interpersonal communication and about the communication by humour. Although many theories try to explain this phenomenon, they can do it only partly as humour cannot be defined by strictly given patterns because it is a result of an individual experience of incogruity between what you know or expect and what really happened. In an attempt to explain what humour is many theories have been developed that are condensed into three types: theory of superiority, theory of relief and theory of incongruity. This article relies on these three types of theories. The article contains the brief review of various domestic and foreign research results as well as the analysis of the examples of the successful application of humour in everyday communication. HOPA test by Mirjana Krizmanić and Vladimir Kolesarić (1992) is aimed to measure different aspects of respondents' sense of humour. The respondents should have at least two years of the secondary school experience. The test measures communication by humour of individuals in stressful events or lasting stressful situations. The aim of the research (carried out in 2014 on a sample of 129 participants) was to examine how much people tend to use humour in everyday communication during long-lasting stressful situation, such as the deep economic crisis in which Croatia is at present, and whether this humour was passive, semi-active or active. The research shows that the examinees were not creative enough to produce the witty comments, but their passive sense of humour, which means understanding and accepting jokes, is highly developed.
