Conlangs: A Comparison of English and Sindarin Morphology of Nouns
This paper makes a comparison between the English morphology of nouns with the morphology of nouns of Sindarin, with an attempt to examine the potential of conlangs and conlanging as a linguistic practice. Conlanging is defined as the practice of language invention, whereby an individual or a group devise a new language within a relatively short period of time, which differs from natural languages by the fact that natlangs developed over long periods of time and across many generations of speakers. In inflectional terms, Sindarin possesses a case system, and recognises three numbers as opposed to two in English, and prefers the method of vowel mutation to affixation when forming the plural, though Sindarin only recognises grammatical gender in proper nouns, and otherwise agrees with English. Affixation does appear in the formation of class plurals, but truly comes into play in derivation, where Sindarin is just as prolific at forming new words as English, and has a similar general preference to suffixation. Additionally, Sindarin, just like English, makes great use of compounds, especially concerning the creation of names, the vast majority of which come as compounds.
