The structure solutions of memantine dihydrogenphosphate: supercell and subcell description

The X-ray diffraction pattern of needle-like crystals of an anhydrous form of memantine (1- amino-3, 5-dimethyladamantane) dihydrogenphosphate at room temperature, in addition to strong peaks, exhibits weaker reflections hkl with k=2n+1. The structure can be solved and refined in two ways when the data set with and without weak superstructure reflections are considered. By omitting the weak reflections, the structure can be solved as an average structure (subcell) in the space group I2/c. By using the whole data set, the structure solution can be obtained in the space group P21/c resulting with the so-called superstructure. While in the average structure solution there is an apparent disorder involving methyl groups of the cation, in the superstructure model it is not present.
