Marian Devotion in the Medieval North Adriatic Community: Case Study of Island of Rab

The Cult of Virgin Mary as a traditional local cult on the island of Rab can be traced through different types of representation. Based on archival documents, it is possible to reconstruct at least seven medieval chapels, including the most important sacral object such as the Cathedral, with the title of Mary. It is the same with several fraternities whose main job was to propagate the cult. The local development of this cult is shown through pious objects such as wood- carved statues, icons and relics of Mary at the Cathedral Shrine (sanctuarium). But most importantly, this cult spreads in the community through religious processions to various Marian feasts with specific types of narratives such as: local miracle stories (memorabilia), Planctus versions, sermons or hymns. This paper deals mainly with the codex named Picićeva pjesmarica (The Picić Poetic Miscellany, 1471) originally from Rab. The Codex was written in Italian, Latin and Croatian by one of the canonists of the Cathedral of Rab, Matej Picić (Matheus de Piçicho de Arbo) and is today preserved as Codex MS. Canon. Ital. 193 at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Contains more poems dedicated to the Virgin Mary or Mother of the God. It is a rare material clue that during the late medieval period in the Rab community, the Marian cult developed as the central cult of the community ; opposite the imported cult of Saint Christopher, the most famous today. The Code also illustrates the relationship of one local cult in the medieval community of the island of Rab with other parts of the northern Adriatic region, especially Venice.
