A comparison of a 7-day duplicate diet study and a 7-day food record for estimating total fat and fatty acid intake

The aim was to compare the dietary intakes of total fat (TF) and fatty acids (total saturated (SFA), total monounsaturated (MFA) and total polyunsaturated (PFA), respectively( obtained by a 7-day duplicate diet study and a simultaneous 7-day food record. 39 participants (25 females and 14 males) took part in the study. Significantly higher mean intakes were found for all monitored groups by the method of weighed food records. Intakes of total fat and total fatty acids calculated on the basis of the food records and food composition tables were 16% (77.11 ( 24.79 g vs. 64.68 ( 21.41 g), 34% (27.79 ( 9.81 g vs. 18.45 ( 6.71 g), 17% (27.75 ( 9.61 g vs. 23.11 ( 8.49 g) and 18% (21.09 ( 6.79 g vs. 17.29 ( 6.22 g) higher for TF, SFA, MFA and PFA, respectively, than the respective values obtained after analysis of the collected food duplicates. These data indicate that a simple self-administered 7-day weighed food record can give useful information about fat and fatty acids intake, provided that subjects record the intake of foodstuffs in more detail.
