Conservation genomics in the management of the Mouflon population from the hunting area Kalifront
Mouflon population (MKA) has been founded in 1998 by a 33 female and 8 male individuals in the open state hunting area Kalifront (Rab Island, Croatia). Since its foundation this population has been closed and currently there are >200 individual. However, decline in trophy values and body weight has been observed during last 10 years. We genotyped 32 mouflon individuals by OvineSNP50 BeadChip array and estimated runs of homozygosity based inbreeding levels with respect to different base populations (FROH>4Mb, FROH4-8Mb, FROH>8Mb and FROH>16Mb). The same calculations were also performed on a dataset taken from the public digital repository (http://dx.doi.org/10.5061/dryad.2p0qf) for Sardinian mouflon (SAM), European mouflon (EMO) and Soay sheep (SOA) population as well as for the several domestic sheep populations. Extreme inbreeding level was observed for MKA at all levels (FROH>4Mb=0, 205, FROH4-8Mb=0, 086, FROH>8Mb=0, 120 and FROH>16Mb=0, 050). Obtained inbreeding levels were lower in comparison to EMO, but much higher in comparison to SOA, SAM and other domestic sheep populations. We further analysed future actions and options for introgression of less related mouflons.
