Factors of Self-Sustainability in Social Entrepreneurship: The Case Study of Friskis&Svettis Stockholm

This paper focuses on the self-sustainability aspect of social entrepreneurship (SE). Self- sustainability is defined as the capability of an SE organization to operate by relying on the money earned through trading its products in the free market. The research starts from the fact that the achievement of self-sustainability represents a fundamental business challenge for a tremendous fraction of all SE organizations. Therefore, in order to provide new insights on factors of SE self-sustainability and preferably encouraging practical improvements in the field, we investigate some of the self-sustainability factors of Friskis&Svettis Stockholm - a self- sustainable organization that can be labeled as a part of SE. A qualitative research ; case study approach was conducted. The data collection primarily consisted of conducting in-depth interviews. The interviewees were selected purposively and included six highly ranked Friskis&Svettis members who represented five different levels in the hierarchy of the organization. The gathered data was thematically analyzed through the coding process for which Atlas.ti software for qualitative data analysis was used. For the purpose of creating thematic categories (codes), the open coding was used. The main research findings are five thematic dimensions i.e. five groups of the organization’s self-sustainability factors that emerged after the coding process: 1) business model ; 2) commercial awareness ; 3) adaptiveness to the hybrid setting ; 4) approaches towards external environments ; and 5) culture of the organization.
