Retained surgical items: Implications for anesthesiology practice
RSIs are any soft goods (e.g. sponges or towels), sharps/needles, instruments, small miscellaneous items, devices or unretrieved device fragments inadvertently left behind in a patient's body in the course of surgery. RSI have also been associated with approximately 5% mortality, 15% permanent disability, and roughly US $ 1.5 billion burden to US health care system. Surviving patients may sustain both physical and emotional harm, depending on the type of object retained and the length of time it was retained.
