Combined Series and Shunt Characterization for Accurate Resonant Frequency Extraction and Circuit Modelling of Surface-Mount Inductors

A methodology that combines two-port series and two-port shunt S-parameter characterization method is proposed. The presented methodology is used to accurately extract the self-resonant frequency and equivalent circuit model of three surface-mount inductors. The extracted model is valid up to 1 GHz and it consists of frequency-independent lumped elements. The values of the elements are optimized to fit the impedance characteristics obtained by measurements. The extracted model allows accurate estimation of impedance characteristics and self-resonant frequency of characterized inductors.
