Lectures: Radiocarbon dating method – an introduction; Application of 14C dating in archaeology and cultural heritage characterization; Application of 14C method other than dating – radioecology, biogenic fraction
The series of three lectures presented various topics related to radiocarbon dating and applications. In the first lecture the basics of the radiocarbon method were presented, as well as the Radiocarbon Laboratory of the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI), which celebrated 50th anniversary. In the second lecture some of the most important results of dating archaeological sited and cultural heritage objects in the RBI 14C laboratory were presented. Finally, how 14C in the atmosphere can be used as a tracer of anthropogenic activities and in monitoring releases from nuclear power plants was shown in the final lecture. One of the promising applications of 14C is determination of biogenic component in various fluids, such as liquid fuels and natural essential oils. The direct method of measurements by liquid scintillation cocktail is very simple and does not require complex preparation. However, the method is sensitive to colour quenching. At the RBI we developed a specific method of evaluation of measurement data than can be applied to various fluids that are not too dark to produce high quenching.
