Der Dorfgeistliche in den Erzählungen Victor von Reisners
The paper examines the motif of the cleric in Slavonian literature dating from the beginning of the twentieth century. In analyzing this motif, possible traditions and influences have been taken into consideration, with special emphasis on the motif of the cleric in Victor von Reisner’s short stories. The analysis of the three selected short stories, “Parok und Pope, ” “Der Domačina, ” and “Die Frommen, ” which are set in a Slavonian village and have clerics as main characters, shows that the motif is influenced by Southern-European, specifically Serbian, literary traditions. The motif shows an interesting complexity and a development of the character of the cleric in Reisner’s works. The cleric is at the same time the pillar of reason and morality as well as the protector of the lively village traditions and their social dynamics to the point where his humanitarian motivation collides with his clerical duties. He is prone to mistakes and accepts in the long term the rather easygoing village manners. The author exploits this crisis in character to achieve a comic note and a more colourful and distinctive approach to the motif.
