Hindi and Urdu – Short Comparison
There are different opinions about the relation between Hindi and Urdu. Although at first they seem to be one language, they are separated by many things – history, politics, religion, culture and literature. These two languages have the same root, the same grammar system and almost the same lexicon, and Hindi- and Urdu-speakers can have simple conversations without any difficulty. Yet on the other hand, Urdu has a high number of Arabic and Persian loanwords which Hindi- speakers can not understand, while Hindi has multiple Sanskrit loanwords which Urdu-speakers can not understand, especially in a language of high level. Serious conversations about topics such as science or politics are impossible. Besides that, there are not only formal differences that separate these two languages but there are also different historical and cultural backgrounds, as well as different kinds of literature, which have built different identities.
