Biocompatible membranes in acute renal failure, hope or illusion?
We have retrospectively analyzed all group of 47 patients with acute renal failure. They have been divided into two subgroups. Each group underwent hemodialysis on a different membrane. We have documented a difference in the outcome as well as in the number of hemodialysis sessions required for renal function restituion between the two gropus. The groups were comparable with respect to their APACHE II score. Patients who undenwent hemodialysis on the polysulfone membrane had statistically significant better survival rates when compared to those whose hemodialysis protocol included modified cellulose acetate.
