Overlap syndrome (OS) and mixed connective disease (MCTD)

Until recently the overlap syndrome (OS) and mixed connective disease (MCTD) have been rarely described entities in pediatric rheumatology. OS is sonsider in the presence of at least two rheumatologic entities at same time, while MCTD is classified as a subtype of systemic lupus erythematosus with high anti-RNP antibody representing antibodies agains nuclear proteins. In spite of these definitions, there still remain a number of nosologic difficulties in proper classification. During the last decade, we treated 15 patients with OS and MCTD among a total of 240 rheumatic patients, or 5%. Nine patients had OS, three had MCTD, while three patients were diagnosed as neonatl lupus syndrome. Two of three mother of these newborns had minimal clinical signs of rheumatic disease, with positive anti-Ro/SSA and anti-La/SSB antibodies.
