Memory and identity landscapes of Slavonski Brod- Posavina County, the Republic of Croatia

Landscape is a memory of history, value of today and a heritage we need to preserve for our successors. Identity and memory landscapes reflect arts, architecture, lifestyle, conflicts, nature, ways of cultivating the land and much more. Historical processes and interactions in landscape are cumulative cultural, historical and natural heritage reflected in the lives of people, communities, nations and/or humanity, creating a (collective) memory and identity of the space. In this context, landscape architecture has an important role in transdisciplinary approach to revealing, understanding and preservation of historical continuum and shaping the future. With that idea in mind, this research was conducted. Through twelve examples, the most important memory and identity landscapes of Slavonski Brod – Posavina County (The Republic of Croatia, Europe) are presented to the international scientific and expert community. The aim was to present the variety of memory and identity landscapes and to give a historically comprehensive overview of heritage sites which date since prehistory to the present. Basic features considering protection policy, surroundings, use, heritage category, physical components, perception, transformations and the role of landscape architects were examined. Research method is based on analytical approach and synthesis of cognition resulting from literature review and field research.Methodology and tools applied in research, protection and presentation of memory and identity landscapes of Slavonski Brod- Posavina County are presented through several examples, highlighting the role of landscape architecture in planning, design and management practice. Heritage sites of Slavonski Brod-Posavina County, immersed in picturesque landscape of the Sava River Valley, quietly witness turbulent border military events of world history, since prehistory to the present. Remainders of ancient Roman period, the Middle Ages and the Baroque, which today are an integral part of both urban and rural landscape of this part of Eastern Croatia, have the greatest historical significance. Lately, more attention has been given to the wider context of those sites. The perception of historical place as secluded entity in space with no more than historical (archeological, architectural, artistic) significance changes into the perception of historical place as memory and identity landscape with cumulative natural, cultural and historical value that includes both physical (morphology, transformations) and spiritual (education, identity, feeling) component, with the past, the present and the future in mind.
