Animals and Creatures in Moonspell Poetry
Moonspell is one of the best known gothic metal bands in the world, and the most famous heavy metal band coming from Portugal. Making music since 1992, their most recent and eleventh album was named “1755” (2017). The album is dedicated fully to the historical event of the Great Lisbon earthquake, which took place in 1755. Besides being a concept album, the album’s other curiosity is that it is the band’s first album that is entirely sung in Portuguese. Like many other gothic artists (writers, poets, musicians, graphic artists, etc.) one part of Moonspell’s work is dedicated to the various animals, beasts, mythological and other creatures typical to gothic (sub)culture. Moonspell debuted with the album named “Wolfheart” (1995), which opened with a song “Wolfshade (A Werewolf Masquerade)”. In the same album, one can find a song about “Vampira”, and also about a Lusitanian deity Trebaruna. Furthermore, in all of their other 10 albums, they play songs about the animals and creatures, such as “Raven Claws”, Capricorn at Her Feet” (2003), “Scorpion Flower” (2008), “Lycanthrope”, “Malignia” (2015), “La Baphomette” (2015), etc. In my lecture I will show the influence of classical gothic culture on Moonspell animal/creature poetry.
