Potentials (un-)leashed: A critical review of change agency in remigration processes
The impact of (re-)migration on socio-cultural, political and economic transformation processes both in sending and receiving states is often framed by the “migration and development nexus”. The paper seeks to scrutinize this nexus with respect to remigration and its potential for change agency in various countries of origin in Central, Eastern, and South Eastern Europe (CESEE), which are engaging in post-communist transformation processes. It is based on the assumption that so-called change-agents play a significant role as initiators of change and thus contribute to development. By refering to qualitative research based on semi-structured interviews with remigrants insights are given into the social parameters and dynamics of change agency. Examples from diverse professional and social contexts (i.e. academia, private business, the NGO-sector) point out the role of networks and social capital, of chances and obstacles, as well as strategies employed by remigrants to create space for change agency.
