Applicability of nanostructured lipid carriers for enhancing in vitro bioavailability of zeaxanthin

Carotenoids are fat-soluble valuable phyto- nutrients that comprise a group of more than 700 compounds. Zeaxanthin (ZEA) belongs to the group of oxygenated derivatives of carotenoids called xanthophylls. Previous studies have shown the high antioxidant properties of natural ZEA. However, its low solubilization in physiological systems limit ZEA’s bioavailability. To enhance its absorptionin the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) we included lipids in delivery systems. When formulated as nanoparticles, that approach can result in improvement of mucosal adhesion of the molecule due to small particle size what can enhance GIT residence time. Between the formulations that contain lipids, we selected nanostructured lipid carriers( NLC) that are also able to protect the molecule from degradation.
