Development of provisional nutraceutical classification scheme (PNCS) for improved pharmaceutical patient care and targeted nutraceutical formulation
Pharmaceutical patient consultation on nutraceutical containing dietary supplements is a demanding part of every day pharmaceutical patient care, mostly due to increasing number of marketed substances, lack of evidence based guidelines and legally unregulated function claims (such as „enhanced bioavailability” or „advanced/improved formulation”) Increasing number of nutraceutical compounds that are being formulated as dietary supplements and vide variety of current formulation approaches, makes the critical estimation of validity of such claims extremely demanding for a community pharmacist Development of PNCS by applying the concepts of biopharmaceutical drug classification to the section of nutraceuticals, would simplify and optimize the appropriate selection of nutraceutical formulation approaches In addition, PNCS would separate highly bioavailable nutraceuticals from those that relay on advanced formulation solutions for adequate bioavailability which would simplify pharmacists decision making and contribute to improved nutrivigilance in the area of dietary supplements.
