Historical perspectives on the transition process
This chapter provides a brief overview of the main sources of changes that took place in transition economies and emerging markets. The paper concentrates on the basic social and economic issues from the beginning of this century until the present days. The first part of the chapter analyses the first transition from capitalism to socialism. It gives the reasons for the rise of socialism and the economic problems that faced the theoreticians and the practitioners at that time. The next part deals with development under socialism and its influence on colonial countries, i.e. developing countries in general. We trace, the sources of differentiation of national economies and the conflicts that ended by strengthening the bureaucratic grip in most of the socialist countries. Next we analyze pretransition crises. The process of transition is described in the fourth part of the chapter ending with concluding remarks which underline some of the current dilemmas of the transition process.
