Do dark personality, uncertainty and group relative deprivation predict the same kind of political violence?

Purpose: The main goal of this study was to test if different support for different kinds of political violence can be predicted with the same set of predictors with similar efficiency. Background: Many different models were created in an attempt to predict the occurrence of political violence. While many of these approaches have been at least somewhat successful in the prediction of supporting political violence, insufficiency of studies that test multiple models (or combine their elements) in the same samples raises an important question regarding the qualitative nature of the predicted support: do all models predict the same aspects of political violence or their predictiveness depends on the specified type of political violence? This study focused on the elements of models that were in previous studies confirmed as predictors of political violence: dark personality traits, uncertainty and group relative deprivation. Methods: The sample of this correlational study consisted of 299 participants – students of different Universities in Croatia who completed questionnaires regarding the perception of their group being deprived, personality and uncertainty. Results: Results confirmed that different forms of political violence tend to be explained by different sets of predictors. Except for vandalism, forms of political violence predicted by dark personality were not predicted by group relative deprivation, and vice-versa. Significant interactive effects were also found. Conclusions: The study provided arguments in favor of both specifying political violence and combining concurrent models in order to achieve more precise predictions.
