Development and usage of open educational resources among teachers
Open educational resources (OER) enrich teaching and learning processes but their use and reuse is also bringing new challenges for teachers, such as finding appropriate learning materials, minding copyright, tackling with technological issues, adequate use in learning environment etc. University Computing Centre SRCE promotes open education and open access and actively supports teachers in development and use of OER. In reaching decision for conducting survey, important incentive for survey were results of the project ExplOERer: Supporting OER re-use in learning ecosystems. The aim of the research was to get information on how much, if at all, teachers use OER, and do they develop them on their own or in collaboration with colleagues and students. The paper presents result of online survey completed by 595 teachers mainly in secondary and tertiary educational institutions in Croatia. The results indicate that regarding activities related to development of new educational materials and collaboration with colleagues, teachers do notably collaborate and also observe or replicate colleagues’ strategies to design a resource or solve, a curriculum-related problem. Regarding the need to design new course or lesson results have confirmed that higher education teachers are more often developing new materials when compared to school and vocational teachers. In the context of empowering the openness, results are encouraging and show that 48 % (n = 288) of teachers are considering sharing their resources with colleagues. With regards to seeking information about copyright status of learning resources ; 32 % (n = 193) of teachers do it very often, but 20 % (n = 118) of them never sought copyright information. Also, in order to gain additional insights into survey results, additionally interviews with nine teachers were conducted and they have emphasized the importance of open educational resources for their teaching practice and professional development. Some of them have also shared obstacles such as difficulty to find quality educational resources that fulfil specific educational goal and, in some cases, complications during search for licence information.
