The perspective of district cooling based on waste to energy in the central European city

The district heating and cooling systems provide a valuable urban energy infrastructure which can be used to facilitate the integration of various renewable energy sources into energy systems. One of the renewable energy sources whose integration in energy system via district heating and cooling can be achieved is municipal waste. By applying waste to energy concept, amount of waste disposed on landfill can be reduced, and a significant amount of electricity, heat and cold can be produced in a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. The goal of this research is to investigate the possibility of integration of CHP incineration plant into the existing district heating system in the city of Zagreb. The sizing of the plant is determined based on the prediction of the quantities of disposable municipal waste by 2040. To secure 365 days of heat demand, the possibility to install a district cooling network is investigated. Installation of warm district cooling system, where heat is distributed with existing heat distribution network to chillers, located on building sites, is simulated. The results show that the introduction of district cooling has a positive effect both on the reduction of primary energy consumption, the economics of the waste to energy plant, greenhouse gas emissions, operation of DH system and amount of waste placed in the landfill.
