Sustainability and Industry 4.0 - overview of driving forces and barriers
Contemporary manufacturing industries are in the middle of a transitional period of comprehensive and systematic digitalization. The goal is to achieve the Industry 4.0 concept within a single digital environment in order to further enhance the performance indices and, thus, to retain, and possibly improve the existing competitiveness levels at related markets. These transformations are quite demanding and adequate strategies for this transitional period should be developed to avoid possible shortfalls in the future. To this end, this paper deals with the sustainable transformation strategy development along the path of Industry 4.0, with particular emphasis on its driving forces and barriers. In particular, it provides distinct answers on how to create sustainable transformation matrix for the transitional period and how does the Industry 4.0 concept deal with the term of sustainability, as well as what are its impacts on the society and environment.
