Innovation culture in crony capitalism: does Hofstede’s model matter? / J. Švarc and J. Lažnjak

Optimal innovation culture enables a strong entrepreneurial economy with a high innovative potential and improved competitiveness on international markets. What determines innovation culture? It is almost impossible to answer the question unambiguously, because many factors with various significant influence the development of innovation culture. However, the lack of these factors could seriously endanger necessary preconditions for achieving required innovation culture, what can enable the innovation and technological progress and halt economic development. While achieving optimal innovation culture is quite difficult and takes a lot of time and effort to align and arrange all the parts, on the other side it is relatively easy to jeopardize the existing achievements. Recent publication of Croatian authors also contributed to the general discussion about the role and the development of innovation culture, particularly having in mind the impact of crony capitalism. The word is of the book Innovation Culture in Crony Capitalism Does Hofstede’s Model Matter? by Jadranka Švarc and Jasminka Lažnjak and published by Institute of Social Science Ivo Pilar, Zagreb. The authors in this interesting book impressively and with the scientifically based evidence explain the influence of the cultural determinants on innovation development. Building on the key findings from the study, other authors in some other researches should propose a set of recommendations for the improvement of the situation in Croatia. No doubt that this book provides sufficient information and analysis to stimulate more academic and practitioner research as well as public policy activities on the important topic of innovation development. One could congratulate the authors for their extraordinary achievement in the analysis on the innovation culture in the circumstances of crony capitalism.
