Model Predictive Control for Economical Optimization of Market Players Behavior in the Dutch Liberalized Electrical Power System
Within the Dutch liberalized power system different market players compete for supply and demand of electrical energy. As supply and demand needs to be in balance at every moment, market players need to closely monitor their power production and take actions accordingly to guarantee that they can fulfill their trade agreements. Currently only reactive feedback controllers are applied to minimize deviation from these trade agreements, ignoring the large predictability of loads and the economical optimization of both generator distribution and corresponding power profiles. This paper analyzes the economics of a market player and presents a model predictive control approach based on a novel prediction horizon for maximizing the economical profits. This control strategy is compared to a reference controller representing the current feedback controllers. The effects of the optimal economical control strategy on the system balance are investigated in more detail.
