Evaluation of Dynamic Fracture Toughness Through Instrumented Charpy Method
The purpose of this work is to compare the dynamic fracture toughness values obtained from the instrumented impact testing machine. For this research the high strength pipelineAPI 5L X80steel was used. Standard unprecracked CharpyV-notch(CVN)specimens were machined from the 10 mm thick steel plate where the notch orientation of the samples was in the rolling direction and perpendicular tothe rolling direction. Dynamic fracture toughness was estimated from the crack initiation point. The crack initiation point was estimated by compliance changing rate method (CCR). According to the crack initiation point the dynamic fracture toughness was determined by the Rice`s J integral equation. The results of the dynamic fracture toughness on the specimens cut from the different rolling directions show the difference within 2%.
