Zooplankton reflecting the trophic state of the dam reservoir Modrac (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Research on the dam reservoir Modrac was iniciated with the appearance of zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha and water supply of the town Tuzla and it includes analyses of the plankton and benthos communities, as well as the physico-chemical parameters of the water. The majority of the rotifers fauna being filtrators of nanophytoplankton and microfiltrators-sedimentators of which four species, Keratella cochlearis, K. cochlearis var. tecta, K. quadrata and Kellicottia longispina, were constantly present. When present, species from genus Polyarthra and Synchaeta were always found to be more abundant than other macrofiltrators. The Rotifer density was the highest (2669 ind/L) in the spring when it surpassed values characteristics for eutrophic lakes. This is due to the high abundance of dominant species K. cochlearis var. tecta. In the sommer the Rotifers abundance decrease, reaching the maximum of 587 ind/L, but the species K. cochlearis var. tecta still dominate. Three representatives of Cladocerans were constantly present: Bosmina longirostris (microfiltrator), Daphnia cucullata and D. longispina which inicated the mesotrophic degree of the reservoir. One euritopic and two eutrophic species (Thermocyclops crassus, T. oithonoides and Cyclops strenuus landei) with high density of their larval stages were dominant within the Copepoda group.
