Role of Power to Heat Systems in Energy Transition: Case Study of South East Europe
In energy systems in transition from fossil fuel- based energy supply to the systems based on variable renewable energy sources, technologies which can offer balancing and storage are of particular interest and importance. Such technologies include power-to-heat concept, offering the opportunity to use excess variable renewable electricity production for transformation into heat energy by heating the water in tanks next to cogeneration facilities. This use is of interest also as the power source for district heating systems, where it reduces the need for the use of fuel. This research proposes the use of power-to-heat technologies in facilities producing electrical energy and heat for district heating, thus offering balancing to the power system. The role of such facilities in planning the energy system’s development is investigated taking into account future trends in costs of CO2 emissions. To investigate this role and quantify it, a scenario approach and optimization of marginal cost of energy produced is used in this study. To create a model of interconnected market zones, Dispa-SET software was used. A case study area of South East Europe includes several national energy systems connected in the common market, with base year 2015 for verification and future scenario in 2030 created for the high RES integration scenario and utilization of facilities combined heat and power production equipped with power-to-heat technology in countries of South East Europe. Results show the number of hours in which such facilities are dispatched and produce energy, state of charge of heat storage tanks for power-to-heat utilization and overall production from such facilities, as well as the rate of fuel switch in the conditions of different prices of CO2 emissions. These parameters can offer the solid ground for conclusions on the role of such facilities in energy systems in transition.
