Untangling the story behind entrepreneurial ecosystem: The case of Croatia
Entrepreneurial activity does not happen in a vacuum. Instead, individual attitudes, aspirations, perceived opportunities or enacted ventures are consequence of the specific context. However, crafting an external context that will have nourishing effect on the individual entrepreneurial decision seem to be timely, path and location dependent process. Empirical evidence stemming from Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) datasets, particularly related to multinational and multiregional entrepreneurial ecosystems has been growing. However, the systemic explorations of the national entrepreneurial ecosystems are still relatively underrepresented. In order to fill that gap, our study explores strengths and weaknesses of the Croatian entrepreneurship ecosystem. In addition, this study aims to explore interaction and the relationship between different entrepreneurial framework conditions, and to investigate how stable is the Croatian entrepreneurial ecosystem by exploring the differences in expert opinions across time and across their field of expertise. Our findings indicate that entrepreneurial ecosystem in Croatia is deteriorating. Our findings show that perception of the entrepreneurial ecosystem conditions in Croatia is relatively stable and does not vary across the 2015-2018 period. In addition, the expert’s perceptions of entrepreneurial ecosystem conditions are also relatively stable. There are a few significant differences in evaluation of the entrepreneurial ecosystem conditions between experts who have and those who do not have prior entrepreneurial experiences. The study contributes to more detailed insight into the complex and multidimensional entrepreneurial ecosystems in Croatia.
