Inequalities and radicalisation: what we assume, what we know and what we should find out

Inequality, which represents the objectively unequal, or subjectively perceived, unjust distribution of valued outcomes, resources, power, chances or the gaps in access to opportunities, is one of the frequently perceived and theorised driver of radicalisation. However, existing empirical findings and insights are inconclusive and still do not enable nuanced understanding of the role of inequality in radicalisation and violent extremism. In the talk I will firstly shortly review popular and theoretical assumptions about inequality – radicalization linkage. Then I will give short overview and examples about empirical findings regarding the relationship between inequality and radicalisation. I will give a special emphasis on subjective or perceived inequality, its different manifestation and roles in process of radicalisation. By focusing on possible psychological processes behind inequality - radicalisation link I will discuss what we know and what we should find out about questions such as Is (perceived) inequality necessary for radicalisation? and Under which circumstances does inequality lead to radicalisation?

economic inequality, socio-political inequality, cognitive radicalisation, perceived inequality, perceived injustice,
