Online Teaching in Distance Education Course during the COVID-19 Outbreak

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and measures, the transfer to online teaching in the Distance Education graduate course for future teachers happened in the third week of the 15-week course. Initially, the course was designed as a blended course. During the first two weeks of the course, which was face-to- face, the students were introduced to the expectations of the online discussion activities. In the third week of the course, the teacher needed to make adjustments in the course activities (lectures and online discussions) that do not compromise learning outcomes for the course. Online discussion activities were used as a way to discuss themes related to weekly lectures. Among other themes, as a part of synchronous virtual lectures, students were learning about the design of distance learning materials and the characteristics of distance education students. This paper aims to address the following research question: What subthemes occurred as a part of the online discussion on distance learning materials for elementary school students? The researcher conducted a content analysis of the online discussion thread focusing on the distance education materials for elementary school students in Croatia, used during COVID-19 outbreak. The analysis was based on the standard content analysis procedure encompassing six steps: design, unitizing, sampling, coding, drawing inferences and validation (Krippendorff, 1989).
