Contribution to the surveillance and safety of road traffic by using drones on motorways and critical road sections
A drone is a non-crew aircraft or device that can be remotely controlled or flown independently using a pre-programmed flight plan or complex autonomous dynamical systems. Drones are usually used for military purposes for scouting and attacking targets as well as for numerous civilian tasks such as firefighting, police tracking, or field research. Drones are also used in civilian structures such as fire brigade, civil protection or other non-governmental organizations, such as pipeline monitoring, river flow control, flooding or earthquake engagement, and more. Drones also represent replacement of newscast helicopters for monitoring races from great distance, marathons or car racing. There is a wide range of drone types, with different shapes, sizes, configurations and features. One of the most commonly used definitions say that drones are simple remote- controlled or complex autonomous robotically- controlled planes or helicopters. The great advantage of drones is that they can be controlled and operated from a remote location, which can be even thousands of miles away on the other continent. Having in mind all the advantages drones have, this paper outlines the possibility of the surveillance of road traffic by using drones on motorways and critical road sections in order to improve road traffic safety.
