The Motivation of Long-Distance Runners over a Period of Training Time
What motivates amateur long-distance runners and how that motivation changes over a period of training are especially interesting questions nowadays, when an increasing number of recreational runners push their physical and mental limits and strive to master the half marathon or marathon. Thus, the aim of this research was to measure the dynamics of motivational dimensions over a training period which has the goal of mastering the half marathon. The sample included 110 recreational long-distance runners (Nf = 92, Nm= 18) with different level of physical fitness who assessed their motivation after the first 5-kilometre run and after the half marathon had been mastered. The motivational dimensions were measured using The Motivation of Marathoners Scale (MOMS). After the half-marathon was mastered, increased psychological coping, affiliation, personal goal achievement and decreased weight concern were detected. Given the results, the potential specific motivational dynamic for long-distance runners with different levels of physical fitness are discussed.
