To be born under the (un) lucky star. Croatian, German and Polish idioms with the meaning of fateful predestination
Fate and fateful predestination are elusive concepts, in some way defying definition. Cultural conditioning of their comprehension and, consequently, the linguistic realisations are reflected in the phraseology. Contrastive semantic analysis of Croatian, German, and Polish idioms aims to give an insight into the phraseological image of these three languages (the two closely and one remotely related). Research includes idioms with the meaning of (not) being favoured by fate, which, according to many beliefs, governs human actions and lives. The connection between the concepts of fate, Schicksal, Los, los and the phraseological image and meaning of idioms included in the analysis is established. Also, the similarities and differences on the semantic plan among the analysed phraseological material are determined. The phraseological material was collected by excerpting lexicographic and network sources in Croatian, German, and Polish. The aim of the conducted research is to make a contribution to the contrastive phraseology and phraseological studies within the scope of the previously mentioned languages.
