The relation between emotional and social maturity and psychopathology- problem behaviors in children and youth with intellectual disabilities and autistic spectrum disorders

Objective Different factors describe the psychopathology in children and youth with ID and ASD. The emotional development is a good predictor of adaptive/maladaptive behavior as indicators psychopathology problems. Our aim was to assess the relation between emotional and social development and problem behaviors as psychopathology indicators. Method 98 persons, aged 7−21, of both sexes, from the Center for autism, Zagreb, divided into two subsamples, one with ASD and ID, and the other with ID without ASD. Emotional developmental level was assessed on the Scheme of Appraisal of Emotional Development, Došen, 2005. Adaptive behavior developmental level on Vineland-II Scale, Sparow, Balla, Cicchetti, 2005. Problem behavior and mental disorders on Reiss Scales for Children's Dual Diagnosis, Reiss, Valenti- Hein, 1990. Results Multivariate data analysis models were conducted. Results showed signifficant correlation between selected varyables. Participants with ASD showed lower adaptive behavior levels than those with ID. Considerably lower levels of emotional development and disharmonic emotional prophile, were particularly evident in participants with ASD. Correlations between the assessed level of emotional development (phases) in the different domains were positive and significant, showing that the higher emotional level is connected with higher adaptive behavior level. Discriminative analysis showed the connection between the adaptive behavior level, emotional maturity and the development of psychopathology in both samples of participants. Conclusion Problem behaviors as indicators of psychopathology are related with adaptive behavior level and depend on emotional development. These results emphasize the importance of the developmental approach and continuous monitoring of children and youth with ASD and ID without ASD.
