The Landscape in the Regional Plans of the Dubrovnik Area and in the Project DUBROVNIK+

The southern territory of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, which stretches from Ston to Prevlaka, is a very specific area, as much for its geographical and territorial features, as for its inner administrative organization. The county border of this territorially narrow and non-homogeneous coastal area is also, for the most part, the Croatian state border with both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro and it still remains an unresolved issue. The unique cultural and historical heritage, as well as the well-preserved nature further contribute to this area's distinctiveness and make up the of great value. The need for conservation and development of this area still hasn't been recognized in regional plans drafting. The research project DUBROVNIK+ thus starts the regional planning process by taking into account the geographical and territorial distinctive features, the image of the landscape and the natural wholes. This project's key hypothesis is that for the Dubrovnik area planning, the landscape evaluation and preservation at all levels of regional planning documentation are of utmost importance. The comparative analysis of regional plans will accentuate the differences between their starting points and demonstrate the positive and negative effects of regional planning, especially the systematic neglect of landscape importance. The Dubrovnik area regional planning should therefore start from the landscape idiosyncrasy.
