Flow and Suspension Characteristics of Gas-Liquid-Solid Suspension
The work considers the hydrodynamic problems associated with demands of simultaneous gas dispersion and solids suspension with one single Rushton impeller. The formation of ventilated cavities behind the impeller blades and the associated decrease of shaft power and pumping capacity play a dominant role in these systems. Increased impeller speeds are required in order to maintain suspension in gassed system. Turbulent-flow parameters were measured with a laser-Doppler velocimeter (LDV). Simulation of the air bubble dispersion and calculation of bubble trajectories using the Lagrangian method have been preformed. The CFD program FLUENT was used in the particle tracking mode to do the simulations of dispersed, transitional, and flooded conditions in a Rushton turbine stirred vessel with an air sparger. Results showed that the method could produce gas flow patterns qualitatively similar to those observed in experiments. Results of simulation obtained at flooding conditions have shown a very good agreement with experimental data.
