Infrared (IR) dried industrial coatings

The protective effect of the coating depends on the type of the binder, thickness of the coating, degree of porosity and adhesion. In industrial coating protection, time of the drying is very important, and that is why the coatings constantly improve and introduce new drying and hardening methods. Modern industrial production is constantly moving towards reducing the drying time of the coatings, which would shorten the time of making the structure and increase the competitiveness. Infrared drying (IR) is one of the effective methods for accelerated drying of the coating and it is mainly used in serial production. Still, it is not widely used in the industry. The aim of this study was to determine the differences between the physical and chemical properties of the coatings dried at atmospheric conditions, and the coatings dried by the IR emitter. Also, the influence of the distance of the IR emitter from the working piece on the drying time and the protective properties of the IR dried coatings were examined. Corrosion tests in salt spray and humid chambers were performed. Resistance test was performed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3.5% NaCl solution. The results have shown that the IR dried coatings achieve the same efficiency of protection as atmospheric dried coatings and decrease of the drying time for several times.
