“Transformative Apparatus”: Duchamp’s Large Glass and Martek’s Mirror Fragments
The paper deals with the transformative apparatus in artistic systems of Marcel Duchamp and Vlado Martek. Therefore, the paper comparatively confronts the systems of one of the last century’s greatest European artists who anticipated many future artistic phenomena , and the work of Croatian artist Martek, whose activity is associated with the neo-conceptual Grupa šestorice autora (Group of Six Authors) and with procedures of reducing poetic concepts to visual images. Although it is possible to observe the presence of Duchamp’s tradition in Martek’s entire oeuvre, the focus of this paper is the series of glass/mirror fragments. The links can be found in background materials of those works, which connect the effects of transparency of surface, multiplication and deconstruction of reflexion, morphology of the drawing and usage of the lexicon.
