English for the Social Work Profession

The textbook English for the Social Work Profession is primarily intended for the students of social work and active social work professionals, but also to all those who wish to expand their knowledge and master the terminology related to the areas of social work and social policy. The textbook is divided into 12 units relevant for the fields of social work and social policy: Unit 1: What is social work?, Unit 2: History of social work, Unit 3: What is social policy, Unit 4: Education of social workers, Unit 5: Employment of social workers, Unit 6: Demographics, Unit 7: Social work ethics, Unit 8: Social work and human rights, Unit 9: Poverty and social exclusion, Unit 10: Social workers and family protection, Unit 11: Care for the elderly and Unit 12: Care for the disabled. The first six units are divided into two parts, and the last six units into three parts. The first part of each unit provides an introduction to the topic, while the second and third parts comprise extracts from different original texts related to social work and social policy. The texts have been carefully selected to make the textbook as interesting and useful as possible. For that purpose, different text types have been included, ranging from newspaper articles, biographical texts, statistical reports and news releases to the extracts from the legal texts, codes of ethics and conventions. All texts are accompanied by numerous exercises aimed to encourage the readers to express themselves orally and in writing using relevant vocabulary. A special attention was paid to mastering collocations and phrases and to translation skills. The exercises should enable a better comprehension of the topics and research tasks at the end of each unit should motivate the readers for further reading and research. A monolingual Glossary of key terms and an English-Croatian Glossary of key terms used in the textbook have been prepared in order to help the students of social work, the professionals working in the area of social work and social policy and all those who need to use English for Social Work in their studies, research and professional activity.
