Slipped capital femoral epiphysis - physiology, etiology, mechanical versus endocrine factors.
This presentation is part of expanded discussion forum on natural history, evaluation and treatment of slipped capital femoral epihysis (SCFE) with participation of Cigala, Colton, Engelhard, Jacquemier and Visser. Current knowledge on physiopathology of proximal femoral growth plate is presented with special emphasis on development of slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Significance of mechanical factors related to changing morphology of growth plate and influence of weight-bearing during gait cycle is outlined. According to current evidence based on available research data mechanical factors prevail in etiology of SCFE.
