Sažetak
Patients with skeletal dysplasia are heterogeneous group that is rare, but represent 15% of total orthopaedic paediatric out-patient work volume. There are approximately 160 different skeletal dysplasia that average paediatric orthopaedic surgeon will see probably in his/her life-long career. In those patients lower extremity problems deserve surgeon’s attention due to impaired locomotion. However, upper extremity orthopaedic problems are important because deformity, limited motion and pain. To be acquainted with upper extremity problems in patients with skeletal dysplasia is important not only to be familiar with principles of management approach, but also to have knowledge that some hand problems could have systemic consequences. A good example to the later statement is hand polydactyly in chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-van Creveld syndrome) in which up to 50% of patients have cardiac defect, most commonly arterial septal defects or single atrium. Upper extremity problems in patients with skeletal dysplasia could be treated by orthopaedic surgeon in diseases like mucopolysaccharidosis osteogenesis imperfecta, dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica, Ollier disease, multiple cartilaginous exostoses etc. Illustrative case studies from personal practice are basis for updated management aiming for improvement in function and outcome in skeletal dysplasia patients.
