Non-Beneventan Relics in Medieval Dalmatia: Some Examples of Chant Manuscripts and Fragments in German, Central Italian, Normano-Sicilian, and Square Notation

Both Beneventan and non-Beneventan script and notation, preserved or originating from Dalmatia, witness of its variety, providing concrete argument for the inclusion of the Dalmatian region and its musical sources on the map of European medieval script culture. Discussed are sources in the Split Cathedral, Šibenik Franciscan monastery, Benedictine nunnery of St. Mary in Zadar, Franciscan monastery in Košljun (island of Krk), cathedral in Korčula, and several locations in Dubrovnik. The presence of German neumes, and central Italian, Norman-Sicilian, and Beneventan notation in the Gregorian context reveals that most of the scriptoria in medieval Dalmatia were aware of the changes taking place in the Italian centers, even though they copied from Beneventan manuscripts.
