CFD evaluation of hydrodynamic performance of contra-rotating propellers (CRP) using OpenFOAM
In this paper, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study of a contra-rotating propeller (CRP) is conducted, with evaluation of the hydrodynamic performance coefficients of a CRP s et. A series of steady-state (frozen rotor), Harmonic Balance (HB) and transient simulations are carried out using two computational meshes: full propeller geometry and a quarter-geometry with cyclic and partial overlap boundary conditions in a 360◦ far field m esh. Results of simulations are analysed in terms of hydrodynamic performance coefficients of the CRP s et. The coefficients of the individual propellers are presented and compared with experimental data. Numerical results of the transient and HB simulations show good agreement with the experimental values, while the results of the steady-state MRF simulations show a discrepancy from the experimental value for small advance coefficients, but follow the same trend.
