The Catholic Faculty of Theology has been an integral part of the University of Zagreb, along with the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Philosophy, since 1874 when the modern University was established. It is also important to highlight the fact that the studies in theology were incorporated into the bases of the University and had an important role as the forerunner of the modern University. Being an integral part of the modern University the professors of the (Roman Catholic) Faculty of Theology (hereafter: Faculty) were elected to hold the office of Rector, and the election was greatly dependant on law regulations. Thus, until 1926 the law prescribed that the rectors were to be elected accord- ing to turns, namely, that each year a rector from another component of the University was elected. Consequently, the number of rectors from the Faculty depended on the number of components of the University. Until World War II sixteen professors from the Faculty held the office of Rector of the University. Fourteen of them were elected during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, while only two were elected after that time. After Wolrd War II, during the time of the communist government not a single professor from the Faculty held the office of Rector. Furthermore, in 1952, by a political decree, the Faculty ceased to be part of the University. However, the Senate did not confirm this decision, which implied de iure that the Faculty was not excluded from the University. As rectors the professors of the Faculty significantly contributed to the University of Zagreb by founding different institutes, even faculties, protecting the components of the University when they were threatened with abolition, encouraging the construction and adaptation of rooms in the University building and nostrification of degrees, organizing the student canteen, but also with scientific work. Therefore, the aim of this book is to display the mentioned contributions and outline the basic biographical information regarding all the rectors of the University who were also professors of the Faculty.
