Lingusitic aspects of Roma minority education in Croatia: current state and perspectives
In the Republic of Croatia, the Constitutional right to education of national minorities in their language and script is exercised in three models – model A, model B, and model C. Two of them are models of education in a minority language (A and B), while model C is education with a minority language as a school subject. At the moment, the Roma minority is the only national minority that does not exercise their educational right in any of the three models. Fortunately, recent national reform of education, and in the last decade carried out projects and programs that focused on language, introduced many positive changes to the linguistic aspect of Roma education. This paper discusses these changes and their results: from formal recognition and introduction of Croatian as L2 to the attempts to design a curriculum of Roma language(s) and culture.
