Well-to-Wheel analysis of greenhouse gas emissions from LPG and gasoline passenger cars based on tracking real consumption data

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is considered to be the leading alternative fuel in the transport sector in many countries. Different analyses concluded that LPG is a cleaner motor fuel compared to widely used gasoline and diesel fuels. With the aim to expand the estimation of the emissions from passenger vehicles, a deeper analysis within a framework of a life cycle assessment methodology (LCA) has been introduced. Instead of applying standardized calculation methods based mainly on the exhaust emissions measurements, a broader calculation was designed, not just for the purpose of this paper, but also to be applied for further comparison of the alternative fuels. The applied model was based on data obtained by tracking and calculating direct fuel consumption from two average used vehicles. With the aim to confirm the socioecological and economic benefits of alternative fuels as the appropriate transition solution to the low-carbon economy, the given results were used to model the possible scenario in the frame of sustainable development. Since the primary purpose of the conducted analysis was to project the mitigation of GHG emissions by converting the average gasoline car to LPG, the forecast was made in a frame of the road transport sector to highlight the differences in emissions of gasoline as liquid fossil fuel and LPG as a gaseous fuel. Since the test vehicles were chosen thoroughly to represent the ongoing trends regarding age and mileage, the forecast scenario itself was adjusted for a comparison of various analyses conducted not only in Southeast Europe but also in the countries with a similar structure of the driving fleet.
